Heading Back To Egypt: Change in Travel Plans

Going back to Egypt. Change in travel plans.

The end of February 2026 will mark the 7th month of leaving the United States and travelling abroad. Other than minor transportation hiccups, all has gone well. I have been to seven cities in Spain, four cities in Morocco, and two cities in Egypt. I can’t count the two layovers in Istanbul, Turkey because those were only airport stops. I am currently in Bilbao, Spain.

My travel plans have changed. At the end of the month I will go back to Dahab, Egypt instead of later in the summer. I was planning to go to Cairo in May to attend my friend’s conference and then Dahab in June. But my friend’s conference is cancelled so I will go to Dahab now and ground myself there for about two months. After that I want to travel further into the middle east with possible visits to Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Oman (all safe countries by the way). And Dahab is a good departure point. Plus I have to ground myself in one spot for at least 6 weeks to renew my passport because I’m too cheap to pay the expedited fee. 😏 I like Dahab. I liked it the first time I was there in 1999. And I still like it now.

And of course the US dollar goes further in Egypt than in Spain. In fact, the US dollar has lost value against the Euro since I was here in October 2025. But I love Spain. Spain is a long term permanent stop for me down the road and leaving for now has nothing to do with the nonstop rain falling here in Bilbao. 😏

Total cost to go back to Dahab, Egypt from Bilbao, Spain door to door is $208. And that includes taxis.

Cost-wise, this is a good example of how easy it is to travel internationally:

$127.00 – One way airfare from Bilbao to Cairo on Pegasus Airlines (budget airline of Turkey)

$28.00 – Taxi from rental to airport in Bilbao

$25.00 – 30-day tourist visa to enter Egypt

$  7.00 – Taxi from Cairo airport to Bus Station

$19.00 – Overnight bus from Cairo to Dahab

$  2.00 – Taxi from Dahab bus station to rental

$208.00 Total
